to Sister Marguerite Larochelle, s.c.s.l.
(Sainte-Marie-Madeleine)

Sister Marguerite Larochelle, s.c.s.l. general superior of the Congregation for twelve years, from 1976 to 1988, died last August 15.  Her funeral, presided by Mgr. Maurice Couture, archbishop emeritus of Quebec, was held in the chapel of the Provincial House of Levis.
This time of prayer was, as well as the cordial presence
of Mgr. Couture, the unfolding of the liturgical prayers and the large assembly, a genuine and fraternal homage to Sister Marguerite.

Her death was a time for reminiscing about many congregational events which Sister Marguerite initiated and also the times she spent with
her sisters, family members, friends, and former students.

Our gratitude for the quality of her services tinged with her love for Mother St. Louis and
her Congregation might be expressed in terms of either the story of her life as a teacher and superior on different levels, or her Spiritual will which she addressed to her sisters, parents, and friends.  Sister Marguerite would, undoubtedly, choose the second option from
which some excerpts reveal her human, evangelical, and religious values.

«I write my will in gratitude to God whose
grace never failed me.»

«The values that have characterized my life, and that I continued to develop and to deepen throughout my long religious life were acquired in the midst of my family in Levis.»

«I have listened a great deal.  If you only knew how I tried to do it with all my heart.  For me, listening is to hear sounds that a person does not express and to awaken in me unique echoes that are provoked by the profound meaning of sharing.  To listen to someone is beyond the written or verbal expression, it is to go further to seize the  heart of the person who cannot always express everything.  Again, for me, to listen is not giving responses but very often to pray in my heart all the while welcoming deeply the person and her life.»

«I am deeply convinced that:  to trust someone is to enable that person to grow; and to stop trusting, it is to kill her.»

«I have been a happy woman, quite at ease.  What helped me is a little question that I asked myself:  Marguerite, what you think now, is it life-giving?… Another one of my great convictions is to know that, for the most part, I must make my own happiness.  What do I mean?  I must do something to become happy rather than wait for someone to do it for me.»

«Another great value for me was my faith in the Risen Lord on a daily basis.  This gave meaning to my sufferings.  It is true that the cross is part of the incomprehensible God’s ways… Then I joined my suffering to all who suffer in their flesh, the cross of sickness, the misunderstanding, the rejection, the lack of love, in union with Mother St. Louis.»

«My love for the Eucharist is another legacy that I got from my father and my mother.  What a joy to realize the importance that Mother St. Louis attached to this same love for the Eucharist!  Throughout my earthly pilgrimage, I came closer each day to the Eucharistic Jesus.  I drew joy, strength and hope from God’s Word, from the Bread and Wine, from  community life, from friendship and surely from the Name of Jesus.»

«I drew from Psalm 22 (The Lord is my shepherd)
the strength to say my YES, (at the time of her election as General Superior).  I understood that the shepherd
should take care of his sheep.  I have tried to be a women of service with the heart of a good Shepherd.
The values that I cherished most were:  service,
tenderness, listening, understanding, mercy […]

With Him, nothing did I want.  Therefore, I was able to go through the darkest hours, as well as the joyful seasons.  I have known the ravine of anguish, the narrow path of sickness, the straight slope of doubt.  Then, I tried to ignore my feeble physical, moral, and spiritual strengths, and to cry out to the Shepherd my faith in Him : You are always with me, I fear no evil

«My veneration for the Name of Jesus sums up my life.  My deepest faith was that Jesus graced me with his Name.  It was like a devouring fire in me.  He has entrusted to me the mission of promoting the love of his Name now and for eternity.  Even after my death, I wish to continue to impart the love for his Name.  I am convinced that our mission does not end on the evening of our passing; it will only continue, de epen and purify oneself […]

«I leave and bring with me a special wish.  With my heart as a Sister of Charity of St. Louis, I will continue to intercede for you through the power of the Name of Jesus.  Name that heals, that liberates, that enables us to enter into the Paschal Mystery.  I remain with you…  Thank you for the love that you have showered on me.  Once again, I assure you of my affection.»

S
ister Marguerite, thank you for your exemplary life as a Sister of Charity of St. Louis.
Do not forget us now that you are close to the Father.  St. Paul ’s word fits exactly to your life :

your labor of love,
and of your patience of hope in our
