Seeking Answers To Puzzling Questions

 Sr. Candide of Jesus was the instrument chosen by divine Providence to open a door in North America for the Sisters of Charity of St. Louis. For Sr. St. Eugenie and Sr. Marie des Anges : Sr. Candide was a friend who helped them resolve puzzling questions, a confidante in dark moments, a woman with a heart of gold, who was always ready to offer her support.  The excerpts of Sr. Eugenie’s letter dated January 16, 1903, reveal our pioneers’ desire to be acculturated.

January 16, 1903

  Dear Mother,

  Once again, I appeal to your kindness, for I am quite perplexed.

Elementary diploma: Imagine that I have to prepare five students for the elementary diploma, four of them want to take it in both French and English. In French, no problem, I can teach them a great deal, but in English! I am entirely incapable to find English what I need.  I do not have a single English book, except for those I have brought from Vannes, but they are different from those used by my students. I ask you, dear Mother, to kindly send me English books, those required by the curricula: History of Canada, Geography, Mathematics, etc., You know better than I do what is needed… I am sorry to inconvenience you, but I cannot and do not dare ask anyone else but you.

Respect for customs : The number of students has reached 64, but I expect more. Many fathers have pleaded with me to accept their children. As for those who do not live in the church vicinity and are not preparing for first communion, the tuition is 25 cents a month. I think I can do here like I did in France: give a bill to each child at the end of the month. At least, I will do that until you tell me what is best to do.

A Question of common sense : you know that we are thinking about taking in boarders, and we will surely accept them if requested. Monsignor's cousin believes I should charge them as little as possible; she mentioned three dollars a month; this would attract a greater number and compensate for the low cost. This is not at all what I think… I find it as ridiculous as it is ill-advised to admit boarders at such low cost. With five dollars, I presume, it is not even profitable… What is your opinion, Mother?

Private lessons : Many young girls and students have asked for private music lessons. What would be a reasonable price on a monthly basis? for how many hours per week? The same applies to musical theory: monthly cost and hours per week. If by chance, some are interested in taking drawing or painting lessons what would be a reasonable price for an hour a week, or two, if they wanted two hours? {…}

Examination questions : I have one more request: could you for the remaining six months of school or at least during the last two weeks of term, provide me, with the examination questions in both French and English, that you give your students at St. Ephrem? I would need questions in both French and English, for I am not qualified in either language as I do not have the slightest idea about exams in this country. I would be very grateful if you could do that for me.

Good bye, dear Mother. I am sorry for any inconvenience I may be causing you. I am ever so grateful for all you do for us.

Sr. St. Eugénie

Realizing the interest displayed by their students and the people of Ste-Adélaïde de Pabos, both pioneers set aside their worries concerning their future. However, the silence from the bishop of  Rimouski is a source of anxiety for them and for the members of the General Council in Vannes… steps must be taken. Which ones?
