Dear Sisters, Associates,
Dear Relatives and Friends,
Members of the Tutelles, Collaborators,
Friends of the Sisters of Charity of St. Louis, Visitors to our Site,

“To Celebrate 200 years is to Remember … To Celebrate 200 years is to Create the Future”! How truly happy we are in this year 2003, to  celebrate the 200th anniversary of the founding of the Sisters of Charity of St. Louis!

Foundation

Impelled by the evident needs
and inspired by the wise and insistent direction of
Monsignor Antoine-Xavier Mayneaud de Pancemont,
Bishop of Vannes, France,
Mother St. Louis, founded our apostolic Congregation
in that city on May 25, 1803.
We commemorate that beginning with jubilation!
We honor with thanksgiving,
the 200 years of gratuitous service!

Update on the charism

Our Congregation, born as it was out of the ravages of the French Revolution and marked throughout its history by the Paschal Mystery, strives always to embrace that mystery more fully and to incarnate it through our charism and mission.

In seeking to identify ever more deeply with Jesus Christ in his compassionate love for those who suffer, we  commit ourselves to actively live and proclaim that love.  We are immersed in the Church’s mission of education and evangelization, and as an Institute of Charity, particularly among the most neglected and disadvantaged.

Living in this era of globalization when so many aspects of life are considered temporary and disposable, I find it exciting and urgent, to speak about commitment, fidelity, and that which has endured the test of time.

It is uplifting to recall that
since 1803,
more than 3000 women
in love with Jesus Christ,
have given themselves completely to
the service of education and charity,
as Sisters of Charity of St. Louis.

Motherhouse, 19e Century, Vannes

Today more than 700 sisters, in nine countries situated on three continents, continue to bring the love of Christ to a world crying out for healing; and more that 400  “Associates,” Members of Tutelles, and Collaborators unite with us internationally to continue the spiritual and missionary heritage of our Congregation. Together, we long to accomplish the great project of God for our world.

We are confident that through the prophetic breath of the Spirit, our charism is contemporary and continually being adapted  to meet the demands of our time.  We believe that the mission SCSL is not yet finished!…
